Vercel introduced Virtual Models for AI Gateway on October 28. A Virtual Model ID represents a task-specific model configuration that can be changed centrally while applications continue using the same ID.
Configuration behind one model ID
- Teams can change the selected provider model and configure fallbacks or priority.
- Zero Data Retention settings can be associated with the Virtual Model.
- Role-based access controls who can change the shared configuration.
Vercel says configuration changes propagate to applications and agents using the ID without a code change or redeploy. Provider-specific options still need review when switching providers.
For production traffic, test a candidate model against representative evaluations before changing the configuration used by all callers.
