Vercel's October 28 changelog raises the maximum compressed container image layer from 500 MB to 2 GB. The overall image-size limit remains 15 GB.
When the larger layer matters
- A larger layer can help images with substantial toolchains or dependency sets.
- The increase may avoid splitting some large layers, but it does not increase the total image limit.
- Vercel points to custom Sandbox images for coding-agent evaluations as one possible use case.
Large images can still take longer to build, transfer, and start. Keep layers focused and remove unnecessary build tools from runtime images where possible.
Check the current registry documentation for Docker and CLI prerequisites before changing an image build.
