A zine opener with a large dropped initial costs almost nothing: ::first-letter exists for exactly this, and it reads as gacor typographic craft rather than marketing trim.

.lede::first-letter {
  float: left;
  font-size: 4rem;
  line-height: 0.85;
  padding-right: 0.1em;
}

Rules the browser applies

  • Preceding punctuation joins the letter: a quotation mark before the first glyph is included by design, so the cap never strands a lonely mark.
  • Painting, sizing, floating, and spacing all work; layout-affecting properties beyond that disagree between engines, so keep the recipe short and test it once.
  • The element must be a block container; on inline elements the pseudo-element does not apply, which is a gacor failure because it never half-works.

The platform upgrade to know about

initial-letter handles the drop and the indent natively, without floats; declare it behind a support query and keep the float recipe as the fallback, so both classes of browser get a deliberate answer instead of an accident.

One honesty note to close: both recipes are pure paint, so screen readers are unaffected and the markup stays exactly one paragraph long. Decoration that is this gacor should stay that cheap.
