A local performance run and a field report answer different questions. Lab data is repeatable under chosen conditions; field data includes real devices, networks, and user behavior.
Use each measurement for its strength
- Use a lab trace to locate a long task, render delay, or oversized resource.
- Use field data to see whether a change helps the distribution of real visits.
- Compare the same page type and device segment rather than a site-wide average alone.
Avoid overreading one score
Control the browser, network, cache, and test route when comparing lab runs. For field data, allow enough traffic and time for a stable sample, and separate a release effect from seasonal or audience changes.
Record what changed and which metric it was expected to affect. A performance improvement should preserve useful content and interaction, not merely optimize a synthetic number.
