Delegation works when the person taking the task understands the outcome and has room to make appropriate decisions. A ticket that contains only a title can hide critical context; a ticket that dictates every keystroke removes useful ownership.

Share the boundaries

  • Describe the user or system outcome and how completion will be verified.
  • List constraints, dependencies, and decisions that require consultation.
  • Agree on a check-in point that is early enough to surface risk.

Offer support without taking the task back

Make it clear where the person can ask questions and what access or resources they need. If the approach changes, discuss the impact and update the agreement rather than silently redoing the work.

After delivery, review what was clear and what was missing. Improve the task template so future delegation becomes easier for both the owner and the teammate.
