Technical disagreements often persist because people are optimizing for different constraints. Make those constraints explicit before comparing solutions, then choose the smallest experiment or decision that provides useful evidence.
Frame the decision
- Agree on the user problem and what success would look like.
- List constraints such as reliability, delivery time, team expertise, and future maintenance.
- Compare a few viable options against the same criteria.
Separate evidence from preference
A prototype, production measurement, or clear operational example can test an assumption. If evidence is limited, state the uncertainty and choose a reversible path where possible.
Record the decision and its reason in the place the team expects. Revisit it when its assumptions change, not whenever the same preference resurfaces.
