A good handoff transfers context, not just a task title. It explains what is known, what remains uncertain, and how the next person can continue without repeating work.
Include the operational details
- Link the relevant branch, issue, logs, or document and identify the current version or environment.
- Summarize what you tried, the result, and any assumptions that still need checking.
- Name the next action and who owns it, including any deadline with its time zone.
Make the next step safe
Call out actions that could affect production data, customers, or shared infrastructure. State whether a command is read-only, needs approval, or should wait for another person.
Keep the handoff in the team's shared system of record. A short written summary reduces repeated work and gives the original owner a clear point to resume.
