Frequent task switching adds time because developers must reload context and recover unfinished work. Teams can reduce unnecessary switching by limiting simultaneous priorities and making urgent work explicit.

Make the queue visible

  • Agree on which work is currently active and who owns each item.
  • Set a clear path for urgent requests and identify what will be paused when one arrives.
  • Finish or hand off work before starting another item when possible.

Look for the system pattern

If the same person is repeatedly interrupted by support, review, or changing priorities, measure the pattern and discuss staffing or ownership changes. Individual time-management tricks cannot fix an overloaded workflow by themselves.

Review the team's work in progress regularly. A smaller active queue makes blockers easier to see and helps the team complete work before opening more tasks.
