Engineering work can involve alerts, meetings, support requests, and code review. Focus time is easier to protect when the team knows what is urgent and how to reach the right person.

Agree on response channels

  • Define which channel is for incidents and which is for routine questions.
  • Use rotation or ownership notes so urgent work does not interrupt everyone.
  • Set a reasonable expectation for non-urgent replies instead of implying constant availability.

Make focused work easier to resume

Before switching tasks, leave a short note with the current state and next step. Batch messages when possible, and use a calendar block only when teammates can still see how to get help.

Focus practices should fit the team's support duties and individual needs. If interruptions are repeatedly breaking planned work, bring the pattern to the team rather than trying to solve a systemic problem alone.
