A feature flag can let a team deploy code before exposing it to every user. That creates a controlled release path, but it also adds another state that needs testing and ownership.
Set the rollout rules first
- Choose a safe default when the flag service is unavailable.
- Define the audience and the signal that would pause or expand the rollout.
- Keep authorization checks separate; a presentation flag is not an access-control boundary.
Monitor and clean up
Track errors and product behavior for the flagged path, and provide a quick way to turn it off if the release causes harm. Once the rollout is complete, remove the old branch and the flag configuration.
Document who can change the flag and how the change is audited. A permanent collection of stale flags makes behavior harder to understand and increases the number of combinations a team must test.
