A take-home task can expand quickly if the requirements are vague. Before writing code, identify what the prompt requires, what is optional, and how much time you can reasonably spend.
Turn the prompt into a small plan
- List the required user flows and the inputs or states that need handling.
- Note constraints such as framework, runtime, deadline, and whether a deployment is expected.
- Ask the recruiter or interviewer about ambiguous requirements and expected time investment.
Choose a deliberate stopping point
Prioritize a working core path, clear setup instructions, and a few meaningful tests before optional polish. If time runs out, document what remains and why you prioritized the completed work.
Do not use confidential employer code or credentials in a submission. If the scope appears excessive or unclear, ask about expectations before committing a large amount of unpaid time.
