Engineering teams sometimes need urgent coverage, but treating every message as an emergency makes response expectations unclear. A shared policy helps people distinguish incidents from routine work and protects time away from work.

Make the escalation path explicit

  • Define which events require an immediate response and where they should be reported.
  • Use an on-call rotation or named escalation owner rather than messaging the whole team.
  • State when non-urgent requests will be reviewed during normal working hours.

Keep the agreement realistic

Discuss coverage, compensation, and recovery time according to company policy and local rules. Do not assume that a delayed reply means someone is available or responsible for an incident.

If expectations are regularly violated, bring concrete examples to the manager or the appropriate workplace channel and propose a clearer process.
