A growth goal is easier to act on when it describes practice, not just an aspiration such as becoming more senior. Choose a skill that matters to your work and define how you will use it in real situations.
Turn an aspiration into a plan
- Name the skill and the work context where it matters.
- Choose a small practice opportunity, such as leading a design review or improving a runbook.
- Agree on feedback or evidence that will help you assess progress.
Review the goal with your manager
Confirm that the practice fits team priorities and that you will have support or time to do it. Adjust the plan if responsibilities change rather than treating an old target as a personal failure.
Revisit the goal after a few weeks. Keep what is helping, change what is not, and record a concrete example of what you can now do more independently.
