Dependency updates deliver fixes and new behavior, but a broad version jump can make it hard to learn which change broke a build. A small, reviewed update is easier to diagnose and reverse.
Review before merging
- Check the release notes for breaking changes, security fixes, and required runtime versions.
- Review the lockfile diff and confirm the package source and version match the intended update.
- Run the affected tests, type check, and production build in the same environment used by CI.
Make routine work predictable
Automated update pull requests are useful when they are grouped by risk and receive a real CI run. Avoid merging a security-sensitive update solely because its version number is newer.
Keep a rollback path and record why an exception or pin remains. A current dependency inventory helps teams prioritize fixes without turning every update into an emergency.
