Release notes are a small bridge between a deployment and the people using the product. Translate implementation details into the change a reader can notice, and distinguish a new capability from a fix or a required action.

Answer the reader's questions

  • What changed in the product or workflow?
  • Who can use the change, and is it available everywhere yet?
  • Does the reader need to update, migrate data, or change a setting?

Be accurate about availability

Use plain language and avoid promising a rollout date or result that has not been confirmed. Mention limitations that affect how someone can use the feature.

Ask a teammate outside the implementation to review the notes. If they cannot tell what changed or what to do next, revise the explanation before publishing.
